Franchisor or Franchiser?

Some while back, a lawyer's discussion board lamented the use of "franchiser" instead of "franchisor", and blamed Bill Gates for the spellcheck feature in MS Word.

Mr. MauMau informs me that the MauMau archives contain a dictionary entry from 1976 with the "ER" usage; which leaves me wondering (1) why Mr. MauMau has so much time on his hands and (2) why the MauMau archives go back to 1976... was Mr. MauMau working on his website even before Al Gore invented the Internet?

Anyway, Baruch College (part of the City Univ. of New York) has an entrepreneurship program, so I sought the wisdom of their chief librarian at the Newman Library. (Hey, we pay really high taxes here...got to get my money's worth)

While declining to enter the fray on either side, the library informs me that in the last 6 months, "OR" is the hands-down winner in usage on LexisNexis:

OR cites: 34 law review articles, 48 major newspapers
ER cites:    2 law review articles, 20 major newspapers

Now, I don't want to start something between Dale and Les, but I wonder if they will agree to join me in common cause for the ultimate victory of FRANCHISOR.
